Important Electrical Information

Use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-blade grounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that will accept the plug on the product. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition.

When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. A 14 gauge or 12 gauge cord is recommended.

If an extension cord is to be used outdoors, it must be marked with the suffix W-A after the cord type designation. For example, a designation of SJTW-A would indicate that the cord would be appropriate for outdoor use.

WARNING – To reduce the risk of injury

Always wear appropriate gloves, eye protection, clothing, and a respirator or mask when painting. Hazardous vapors – Paints, solvents, insecticides, and other materials can be harmful if inhaled or come in contact with the body. Vapors can cause severe nausea, fainting, or poisoning.

Do not operate or spray near children. Keep children away from equipment at all times. Do not overreach or stand on unstable support. Keep effective footing and balance at all times. The power cord must be connected to a grounded circuit.

To Prepare the Material

Stir the spraying material thoroughly. Unscrew the cap from the spray gun. Secure the thinning accessory to the side of the container as shown. The accessory should sit perfectly vertical. Fill the container with spray material to the bottom of any of the notches on the accessory.

Add the appropriate thinning agent (Wagner Paint Easy or mineral spirits for solvent-based materials). For every notch that the fluid level in the container rises, the spray material is diluted by 10%.

Note: It is recommended that the material be thinned in increments of 10%, but not more than the material manufacturer’s recommendations.

After the material has been properly thinned and strained, fill the container to the top of the neck.

To Flush the Unit

Unplug the power cord. Loosen the material container by 1/2 turn, but do not remove it. This will relieve any pressure leftover in the system. Pull the trigger so that the material inside the spray nozzle drains back into the container.

Unscrew the container and remove it. Empty any remaining material back into the material container. Pour a small amount of the appropriate cleaning solution into the cup (Water=1/2 full. Mineral spirits=1/4 full).

Attach the cup to the nozzle and plug in the sprayer. Spray the cleaning solution into a safe area. While spraying, gently shake the spray gun. This slight agitation will help break up smaller particles of spray material. Unplug the power cord.

Easy to Clean

Make sure the power cord is unplugged. Push the tab below the trigger, twist, and separate the spray gun from the turbine. Wipe the exterior of the cup and gun until clean. Unscrew the nut and remove the air cap and nozzle.

Clean all parts with a cleaning brush and the appropriate cleaning solution. Reassemble all parts when clean. Clean the rear of the gun (d) with the appropriate cleaning solution. Use a thin layer of petroleum jelly to lubricate the O-ring (e). Reassemble the spray gun.

Unplug the spray gun. Remove the filter cover from the turbine by removing the two screws holding it in place. Remove the dirty filters and replace them with new ones. The smooth side of the air filter must be placed toward the turbine. Secure the cover back onto the turbine.

FAQ About Wagner 0518050 Double Duty HVLP Paint Sprayer

Can this be used for oil-based paints?
Yes. Cleaning oil-based primer took forever to clean because you must use mineral spirits and be sure to get every bit of it off the interior parts.

Cleaning latex-based primer and paint out of the sprayer with soapy water was much easier but still time-consuming, especially since I tried to get every bit of primer/paint off the outside of the sprayer and pump.

In case I want to sell it if we ever finish the kitchen-painting project. I am an almost elderly homemaker, amateur painter, and I was able to use it successfully.

Do I need an air compressor for this? Or is this a stand-alone tool?
No air compressor needed. It only needs an electrical connection. Like this sprayer, but have not been able to use for all of the paintings that I want to do. I have only been able to paint an outdoor (10 x12) shed without thinning paint and it worked great.
Is this an electric sprayer or do you need an air compressor?
It’s self-contained electric. No compressor needed. I second the other comment; it works great for stain and thinned paint, but not as robust as a commercial sprayer for a thicker paint. Of course, you get what you pay for… For the right use/purpose, it’s a great option.
Does this sprayer work on ceilings?
It’ll work. I wouldn’t though. It has a 3-4 inch spray pattern which requires several passes for an adequate coat. It would take several hours for a 10×10 ceiling. Rolling will be 5x faster.
Why am I having to stop every few minutes to clean the sprayer?
I had the same problem. You have to strain the paint when pouring it into the reservoir. This will fix the problem. I bought a metal food strainer for two bucks and it works great. I go for hours (painting my house) without having to stop.
Will this work with Latex paints?
Yes. I got beautiful results with Benjamin Moore Advance paint. Add 25 oz water to 100 oz paint and stir well. Set the turbine at maximum. Start with trigger control screwed all the way out and experiment as you screw it in in increments.

You will reach a point where it works extremely well. Screw it in too far and the spray becomes too coarse. Forget spraying the cabinet doors with them vertical. Too easy to get runs, and the paint levels beautifully with the doors horizontal.

I am looking to use this to acid stain my concrete floor. Think this will work?
Use a deck sprayer with a wand. you will be able to get closer to the floor, and there will be less chance to make the acid air born. Plus you’ll save $100
Can this be used with extra thick paints such as Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick Primer?
I’m not sure specifically about those. The thickest paint I’ve used is Behr paint with primer. It worked well with it and its pretty thick. It’s been a great sprayer

Bottom line

Overall, this will save you a lot of time if you have a lot to paint. There’s going to be a threshold you’ll have to figure out if it’s worth it or not. The finish alone will make it worth it.

But also remember to use high-quality paint like Sherwin Williams if you really care about the piece. A high solids paint that levels beautifully makes all the difference. This is a great entry-level sprayer, and every time we use it we remark how great the finish looks. I’m amazed every time.

And over time it saves you money because you are not buying cans of spray paint. Even with polyurethane, you can save a ton by buying a quart of water-based and using the sprayer. Plus you’re not breathing in the fumes from the oil-based spray paints.
