I have hard clay soil where I live, will this cut through that?
I have areas of hard clay, too, and, if I remember, it will cut through, but the clay will stick inside the tool. You would have to dig it out of the tool or bang it on something hard to get the clay out. This tool works best if you have prepared the soil before you use it. The Garden Weasel doesn’t work well unless you’ve already loosened the soil. I hope my answer helps you.

How long is the handle?
Top of the handle to top of the footrest is 27 inches. From the top of the handle to bottom tip of the metal, the planter is almost 38″ – more like 37 and 1/2 inches.
Is the Garden Weasel used for seedlings also or just for bulbs?
If you want a nice 3 or 4 inch deep round hole, you could use it for seedlings. But since seedlings are usually so small, it seems quicker to just push a little soil out of a shallow hand-dug hole, esp if your soil is not too compact. Out soil is compacted and clayish, so I need a sturdier tool like the weasel for naturalizing bulbs. but yes, it would work
will this cut through landscape fabric?
I haven’t used the bulb planter for that purpose, but I think it would be difficult as the edge isn’t sharp – I had to stand on it and use maximal pressure in clay soil – so I doubt it would cut through landscape fabric with ease. It would be best in a well worked-over garden.
What is the shaft made of and what're the chances that it will come apart from the shovel part?
I had the very same concern. The shaft is made of metal, maybe steel. Both the handle and the digging part are welded onto the handle. The planter is very sturdy and the pointed tip makes it easier to use in clay soil. We planted about 800 bulbs in a couple of hours with no problems.
How does it let go of the dirt? Does the dirt come out easily or is there a mechanism that does it for you?
If the dirt is loose it will; sometimes you can shake it out. Our soil is compact so I have to poke it out. However, you are not kneeling and pushing and twisting with your arms to get a planter in the ground. You are standing and pushing down with your leg and the weight of your body. This more than compensates. Digging the holes is measurably faster. This is the best tool I’ve purchased in a while.
